Symptom

You can download mails from your mailbox, but you cannot send any. The connection to the outgoing mail server cannot be established. You are using a "Speedport" router for your Internet access.

Cause

The Speedport router comes with a software that only permits connections to outgoing mail servers which have been enabled in the router. By default only connections to large Internet access providers are enabled. This firewall shall prevent viruses from sending spam via open SMTP relays of other domains.

Solution

In order to connect to the outgoing mail server of your domain you must add your host's name to the speedport router configuration. Log-in to your router: Open a web browser and enter the ip address of your router into the address line, e.g. "http://192.168.2.1" or the router's name "http://speedport.ip". You may need a password for login. The device's default password is printed on a device type label on the router.

After you have logged in, look up the menu "Secure mail server list". Depending on the router version this may be directly on the user surface or in a submenu. You may need to open the "Internet" menu for it first.

The router includes a list of many provider's default mail servers. You can add your own by an "add" button. Continue to add your host domain, e.g. "elbe.bitpalast.net", "rhein.bitpalast.net". Your own host name can be found in the server set-up mail that you got when you first installed your Bitpalace Business Booster. Store the setting and log-out from the router by the logout link in the router menu. From now on the router will allow you to connect to your outgoing mail server.
